What the heck...

happened to Halloween?

When my sister and I were little my mom handmade every single one of our costumes.

My favorite costume, to this day, was my poodle skirt. I probably wore it 4 years in a row I loved it so much. If I were to ever dress up again as an adult, I'd make one myself! (excuse the bad picture quality...they're old!)

I don't know how I felt about the clown but she did a good job! My sister is still a witch today! (I kid, I kid!)

And my sister and I in our letter sweaters!

She sewed our Easter dresses and our Christmas pajamas too but I realize that's probably a little much these days. Halloween just isn't as fun as it used to be. No one makes their costumes anymore. It's turned into a "holiday" where men dress as women and women dress like prostitutes. Heaven forbid your little girl wants to be a nurse...although all of the nurse costumes now ARE child size.

I just looked an acquaintance's (read: that person on facebook that you wouldn't call a friend, you're just "friends" on facebook so you could read that he's still living in your small hometown and has 57 albums of himself at a club even though he's well past that prime) facebook and he and his friend went as a baby in a diaper and a penis. A HUGE penis with pubes. I'm not really questioning why he's still there.

Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to have my own kids so I can make their costumes.....and then steal their candy like my parents did... "I'm just 'checking it' to make sure it's safe..."

Your poodle skirt is too cute! I cleaned up my facebook friends a few weeks ago and let go around 100 people. It felt great! haha

Oh goodness, I miss those great homemade costumes too. My mom made mine and my favorite was the year I went as Laura Ingalls Wilder complete with a full prairie dress and bonnet.

I know it... that's why I want to learn to sew. My mom made ALL of my costumes and they were intense! I wore a poodle skirt for two years, too. Loved it. And one year I went as "grapes" and had green balloons all over me. Pretty fun!

Oh, girl....I'm TOTALLY with you. It took way too much work to find a decent Halloween costume this year. They were wall so very scandalous!

Ended up that the hubby and I were both sick and didn't leave the house. :( Ughh!

LOVE you in the poodle skirt--too cute! Your Mom was so creative.

Yeah--and why is the sexy nurse costume so popular these days?? I think I might take offense to that! ;-)

Before I have kids, I need to take a sewing class. Mama made all our costumes, so I am biased against store bought costumes. I guess I have a few years before a sewing class is necessary :)

I so agree with you!!! I wish the good ole days of Halloween. I'm not a fan of how everything is a "sexy" costume.

I agree. It has become ridiculous! The costumes the young girls wear are so slutty! We gave less candy to the slutty dressed ones... hehe

I know! When we went into the spirit store this year to find my husband a mask all the kid costumes for girls looked like less slutty versions of the adult costumes! My mom always made my costumes growing up, or we came up with stuff. I admit I went through the slutty costume stage my senior year of hs and freshman year of college but that quickly ended.

hahaha the classic parent line..."let me try that reeses....i just want to make sure that it's safe!" Love it...I was thinking today about how I can't wait until I have kids and can eat all of their Halloween candy!!

I agree with you 1000%! My favorite costume was when my Mom dressed me up as a patch of grapes. She pinned tons and tons of purple balloons on my clothes and put a green vine on my head as a headband. Now, everyone is Hannah Montana! haha

You're so right! Most Moms just don't have that kind of time these days b/c they're busy trying to balance career and family which is no easy feat! Plus, I find that very few women my age actually know how to sew. No one ever taught me but I did buy a sewing machine. That's as far as I've gotten. Maybe one day I'll figure out how to use it. :)

I agree, costumes aren't what they used to be. My sister was a witch more than once and still is I'm sure of it :) I work at a middle school and I really was worried for the kids that had costumes that made them look like they were gonna work the street corner when school let out.

Pubes? Really? Icksville. My Mom used to make my costumes too. This Halloween was my little man's second and I totally bought his costume for the second time. Ah ha

"It's turned into a "holiday" where men dress as women and women dress like prostitutes." AMEN!! I remember I was a waitress one year, my mom hot glued plastic food onto a tray and I wore a white shirt and tie. Other years I was a witch (not sexy witch), soccer player, etc... I can't stand the stuff people do now.

My mom is still helping us make our costumes! I had to work this year but she sewed my sister an awesome jacket with tails so she could be a ringmaster from the circus.

My homemade costumes from when I was a kid are the ones that stand out the most in my memory and are still my favorite...and while I wasn't above the slutty cop/nurse/etc costume deal in college, I'm cringing now :/ Oh well, you live and learn :)

Love the pictures! My mom used to make all of our Halloween costumes too. I still have the poodle skirt that she made me one year.

I love the innocence of Halloween for kids, and I too hate the nasty costumes that "adults" wear to Halloween parties. Why can't they just be G rated and have a little fun!?

All of my costumes were homemade too. If I am lucky enough to have kids, I hope I do the same.
